Learning sustainability through coffee

Life Monteverde offers immersive educational programs for universities, schools and organized volunteer groups on a working coffee farm beside the Monteverde cloud forest.

Through guided discussions, farm exploration and hands-on activities, students connect classroom concepts with sustainable agriculture, conservation, rural culture and the coffee value chain.

At Life Monteverde, coffee is the starting point for exploring the relationships between agriculture, people and the environment. 

Our farm integrates sustainable coffee production, regenerative agriculture, conservation, bio-inputs and food production. Students observe these systems in practice, speak with the people responsible for them and participate in seasonal farm activities. 

We work with professors and program coordinators to connect each visit with the group’s academic interests.

Signature Half-Day Program

Duration: Four hours
Available schedules: 9:00 am–1:00 pm or 12:00–4:00 pm

Our signature experience introduces students to coffee as an agricultural product, economic activity and part of Costa Rican culture.

Coffee and its impact

The program begins with an interactive conversation about the history of coffee in Costa Rica and Monteverde. Students consider its social, economic and environmental importance and its relationship with local communities.

Active farm exploration

Students observe the farm’s sustainability practices and are encouraged to ask questions, evaluate what they see and connect the experience with their previous knowledge.

Interactive coffee tour, from seed to cup

The group explores coffee cultivation, soil management, water conservation, renewable energy, biodiversity and the integration of agriculture and forest. Students visit the coffee-processing, drying and roasting areas to understand how coffee is transformed and how agricultural and processing decisions influence quality.

Guided coffee tasting

A guided tasting of five coffees helps students identify differences in flavor and connect the final cup with decisions made throughout the production process.

Local lunch (optional)

The program includes a local meal with options for different dietary requirements. Many ingredients are grown on the farm.

Seasonal field activity

When weather, season and time allow, students participate in a 30–45-minute practical activity.

Schedule: 9:00 am–3:00 pm
Lunch included

Includes the half-day program with additional time for outdoor learning and practical activities. Students divide into smaller working groups and rotate through seasonal field stations. Activities are selected according to the time of year, students’ ages and the group’s academic objectives.

Potential activities include:

  • Planting native trees
  • Working in the organic garden
  • Preparing compost or bio-inputs
  • Supporting soil and water conservation
