Our story starts in the 1930s, when families from Costa Rica’s Central Valley brought coffee to Monteverde. As their descendants, we’ve inherited not just their farming traditions, but also their values — a deep respect for land, community, and purposeful work.
At Café Monteverde we ensure every step of the coffee journey reflects our commitment to quality, social justice, and environmental sustainability. From germinating seeds, cultivating the land, and hand-picking cherries, to processing, roasting, and exporting specialty coffee, our work is guided by principles that prioritize people and planet.
We also receive and process coffee from 20 local farms, strengthening regional livelihoods and cooperation. As part of this collective effort, we provide training and technical support to other farms in Monteverde, and offer access to national and international markets through shared processing and distribution networks.
Our work goes beyond coffee. We offer environmental education programs, educational agrotourism, and produce bio-inputs like compost and organic fertilizers on the farm. These diverse activities are intentionally interwoven, supporting each other both economically and ecologically, and reflecting our commitment to social justice and environmental conservation.
Over the last three decades, we’ve focused on understanding and improving the quality of our coffee. Partnerships — like our long-running collaboration with Texas Coffee Traders — have helped us refine roasting and cupping techniques, strengthen direct trade, and connect with coffee lovers in North America and Europe. Today, you can find Café Monteverde in cafés, homes, and communities around the world.
Our main farm in Cañitas, just minutes from the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, is a living classroom. Half the land remains under forest cover; the rest is used for coffee cultivation, organic vegetable gardens, and small-scale animal husbandry (goats, pigs, and hens). Everything works together in a circular system that balances productivity with protection of the land we call home.
We regularly host farmer training sessions and collaborate with both domestic and international schools and universities, offering hands-on learning experiences. Our team also participates in research projects focused on coffee varieties, agroecological practices, and sustainable farming techniques.
